Late Anita Mui's mother vows to "seek justice on television"
HONG KONG: Late Hong Kong singer Anita Mui's mother, Tam Mei-Kam, held a press conference in her hospital ward on Monday, to voice her unhappiness over not getting control of her late daughter's estate, reported Hong Kong media.
Tam, who has a history of heart disease, was hospitalized due to her high blood pressure on Sunday.
Despite her condition, 88-year-old Tam spoke in a loud voice whenever she described the way her daughter's assets were "squandered" by the managers of her Mui's trust fund.
She also alleged that she had been deceived into giving up control over Mui's hilltop residence, which had recently been rented out by the managers of Mui's trust fund years after the singer died from cervical cancer.
"Mui told me in private before her death that I can rent out her property on Shouson Hill which would have taken care of my living expenses.
"But when Ann Mui (Anita Mui's elder sister) died in 2000, I was misled into signing some documents that relinquished my rights to manage the property when I was filing my tax returns," said Tam.
In addition, Tam alleged that Mui's trust fund stopped providing her with her monthly allowance of HK$100,000 (S$15,871), after her appeal to gain control of Mui's estate was dismissed by the courts earlier this month.
Tam claimed she was in dire financial straits, with no money to repair her broken down car or even pay her hospital bills.
She vowed to "seek justice on television" and tell her side of the story "if any television programme dares to have me" after she recovers.
Tam had previously claimed that Mui's will, which stipulated that Tam would get only HK$100,000 per month while the rest of Mui's millions was put into a trust fund, was invalid as Mui was not of sound mind when she drew it up.
Despite Tam's repeated court appeals to gain control over Mui's money, Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal dismissed her case as being "without merit" earlier this month.
