Actor Max Mok was arrested last month in Beijing for alleged drug use and held for 15 days. After being released on April 30th, Max immediately resumed work on his latest film project at HuaiRou Studios (in China).

When Max was released, he had promised that he would come out and explain the entire situation in a couple days – sure enough, yesterday afternoon, he took ½ day off work and appeared at the offices of Sina Entertainment for an exclusive interview.

On the day he was arrested, Max did indeed admit to the police that he had taken marijuana. Recounting the series of events, Max explained: “I was not in possession of any drugs at all – the rumor about the police coming to my house and arresting me after discovering that my friend and I was doing drugs is false. That day, I was actually at the studio filming when the police called me and asked that I return home immediately to aid in an investigation. I did not think the situation was that serious, so I rushed home from the studio to meet with the police. When I arrived, they told me that someone had reported that I had taken marijuana. It is true that 3 days prior to that, a friend of mine told me that another friend would be coming to Beijing and so we decided to take him out sightseeing – during the trip, someone took out what looked like a smoking pipe and said that marijuana was inside of it, telling me to try it. At first, I was reluctant, since I’m not a drug user at all, but the person was very enthusiastic and insisted that I try it – I didn’t want him to lose face, so in efforts to be cordial, I obliged and took a puff from the pipe. After that, I stepped away and did not touch the marijuana again.”

He continues: “After the police investigated, they proved that I was not lying and that it was the first time I had ever touched drugs like that. I am not a drug addict and do not have any habit of taking drugs whatsoever, so right now, the case has completely ended. The police said that they will not pursue the situation any further, however I know that what I did was wrong – I have reflected upon it and will not allow the situation to happen again. I would also like to take this opportunity to apologize to all the friends and family that were concerned and worried about me – I will not disappoint them again.”

Asked whether the police requested he provide the names of those who asked him to try the marijuana, Max admitted that he did cooperate with the police and that they will be investigating those individuals. As for the rumor that Max was ‘framed’ due to an incident involving his girlfriend, he denied it, clarifying: “Rumors cannot be trusted. This has nothing to do with my girlfriend. I also saw some headlines saying that I was ‘framed’ because I was going after women – that is entirely false!” (Are you afraid that you will have to ‘socialize’ in this manner again?) “I believe that after this incident, I will not be involved in this type of ‘socializing’ again. I definitely will NOT agree to do things anymore just to give someone face – I will absolutely refuse! I will not make the same mistake twice.” Indeed, a lot of Max’s friends were shocked when they heard of his arrest and many of them supported him, saying that he is not the type of person to do drugs. Max agreed, stating: “My lifestyle has always been quite routine – I would get up in the mornings and do some yoga and some jogging. I like to cook as well.”

In the past few years, Max has kept a low profile, however due to this drug incident, he is suddenly thrust into the limelight again. Max helplessly expressed that it definitely wasn’t the way he was expecting to be back in front of audiences: “I never thought that I would re-appear in front of audiences in this way – it is definitely regrettable and not of my accord. However, after this experience, I have learned my lesson and there will not be this kind of ‘negative’ news about me in the future. Going forward, I will continue my charity work – hopefully, the documentary I filmed earlier (prior to this incident) will give people some encouragement.” Max is a Buddhist and he has expressed that he will seek repentance for his actions. Also, a few years ago, he revealed that that he will be married and have a family soon – when asked about this, Max expressed that he is still pursuing this and that it should happen soon.

Earlier, as soon as Max arrived at the interview location , he was immediately surrounded by dozens of China and Hong Kong reporters, however he continued to maintain a good attitude as well as a slight smile on his face. After greeting reporters, he entered the elevator and expressed that he would give a full explanation of the incident. About an hour later, Max completed the interview and attempted to leave, however he was stopped by reporters, so he had no choice but to stay and answer a few questions. A mainland reporter asked Max why he only granted Sina Entertainment an exclusive interview, to which he expressed that he was not sure, as it was arranged by his management company. A Hong Kong reporter asked about Max’s current situation and feelings, to which he replied that he is feeling fine and not to worry. Asked if he had anything to say to his friends in HK, he raised his thumb in the air and indicated that he is doing fine. Asked whether he knew anything about Suen Hing’s situation, he expressed that he did not.

As Max left the location, he experienced yet another unfortunate situation – as he was driven back home and subsequently to the film studio to continue his work, the car he was riding in was pursued the entire time by various mainland reporters. At one point, the reporters’ car was stopped by a few cars allegedly from the production crew and an argument ensued, resulting in a physical altercation – the police had to be called and a reporter had to be taken to the hospital. At 8pm last night, Max left a post on his Weibo, stating: “When I arrived at the film studio, I was told that a reporter claims he was beaten up by someone from the production crew earlier this afternoon. Actually, that is not true – hopefully the public will not be misled.”
